Why Our Soaps are Palm-Oil Free

Why Our Soaps are Palm-Oil Free

We firmly believe that our collective impact on the environment should be as minimal as possible, and that's why we don't use Palm Oil. Palm Oil and palm kernel products are widely used soap ingredients that we refuse to use. Yes, even the "sustainably sourced" version, and here is why. Palm oil and its derivatives are found in over half of the products in the supermarket, including food, candles, soap, and cosmetics. It is a cheap & versatile oil that does make an inexpensive bubbly soap.

By now you may have read about the devastation being caused by this seemingly unquenchable demand for palm oil. The World Wildlife Fund writes, "The palm oil industry is linked to major issues such as deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty, and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced...300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour to make way for palm oil plantations."

The deforestation and loss of habitat is pushing many native species to extinction. Orangutans, who live only in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra (Indonesia), may be extinct in less than a decade, along with Asian tigers and Asian rhinos. The palm oil mania is causing massive deforestation, and what was mostly limited to Indonesia and Malaysia, is now spreading to Central/South America and Africa.

The value of wild rainforests is almost too great to comprehends. 25% of all medicine in use today is derived from plants, with 70% of the plants containing compounds useful in cancer treatment. Rainforests recycle more than half of the CO2 produced by humans, turning it into healthy oxygen for us! When trees are cut down and burned (as is required to expand palm oil plantations) or allowed to rot, their stored carbon is released into the air as carbon dioxide. And this is how deforestation and forest degradation contribute to global warming.

Great soap can be made without the use of palm oil, it's been done for a few thousand years! Yes, we do pay more for good olive oil and nut butters like shea and cocoa butter, than we would for palm oil products. Given that there is such worldwide demand, Monarch Soap Co. feels that the palm oil industry can survive without this soap maker!

Be an informed consumer. You have to read labels, but because palm oil products have hundreds of different names, such as sodium palmate, palmitic acid, palm kernelate, PKO, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, etc, many times, industries disguise it as "vegetable oil". It can become tricky!

We formulate our product recipes with 100% natural and Nature Identical ingredients that are safe for you and your family, and gentle on the earth. As an environmentally conscious company, we are committed to avoiding ingredients that we deem unsustainable. We are also committed to keeping our offerings free of animal-derived fats such as tallow & lard, or commercial animal milk (as of 2020, the meat and dairy industry is the third leading cause of climate change). On occasion or upon request, we will use local/organic goat's milk (from our next-door family farm) in our sensitive skin soaps.
